Interviews We Love

A fun interview for Erotic Desires, which unfortuntely is no longer around. The reason we like it, is because it has a slightly different take on the "Porn for Women" genre and the adult industry. It was released in 2016

1. What porn did you start out watching? What porn do you watch now?

I’m from Canada, so references might be a bit different. The first erotica I can recall watching were the blue movies that use to be on late-night TV. I saw my first movie at a friend's house, during a sleepover. Then, my friends’ parents’ VHS collections. I don’t ever remember looking for my parents’ porn, but I did have a number of friends who knew exactly where their parents hide not only the movies but also the booze. Kids will be kids. I remember those movies having very heavy storylines, just like a Hollywood film -- a lot different from even the features of today.

A fun twist of fate - today, I watch the porn my friends make. Collaboration, inspiration, and being able to see different visions of erotica -- those are all wonderful things.

2. Why and how did you start Sssh.com? From where came the idea for it?

I started working in online porn production in the very early days -- the mid-90s. I launched Sssh.com in 1999 in an effort to meet viewers’ needs that I wasn’t seeing met elsewhere. We draw on survey responses and other community feedback that comes directly from our members in order to bring their fantasies to life. This type of community-sourced content inspiration has been our modus operandi since day one, and it continues to be a significant guiding principle today..

3. What makes the adult content you produce unique? What's your mission with it?

My mission with Sssh is (and always has been to) create spaces for people to explore their desires via film. Consequently, one of the most significant and unique things about Sssh is where the content comes from -- the minds of our members. A member asks, and we create. It’s funny, we have been community sourcing desire, fantasy, and imagery for so long -- since long before it was even a thing!

I often hear people say that they began producing content because they weren’t seeing erotica that they found desirable in the marketplace. That’s an amazing initiative, but for me -- and thus, for Sssh -- it’s always been a bit of the opposite. It’s not about what I want to see. It’s about what others want to see.

This is not to minimize the fact that I certainly have my own goals with the content I create though -- one of the primary ones being to produce movies that are empowering to women. Our films show sexuality and pleasure in a different light than what is typical found on the web. Sex is positive, an experience where equality and mutual pleasure matter. The sex isn’t happening to women, but rather, women (and men) are eager participants.

So though my work may not be for everyone’s taste, what is real about Sssh is that every bit of content is “real” in the sense that an actual person’s actual desires informed it and are thereby reflected therein. I think that makes Sssh content incredibly unique.
