Interviews We Love

This interview appeard in the print edition of Glamour Poland in 2010

1. When you were starting Sssh.com were there any similar websites? What was the inspiration to start a porn (or erotic) website dedicated to women?

There really weren’t any sites like Sssh.com when we first launched in 1999, to the extent that there wasn't any porn made by and for women. There were a few directors here and there, and a couple of small studios that made porn that was more female-friendly, but back in ‘99, not every adult company even had a website of their own. That was a big part of what inspired me to create and launch Sssh.com; I looked around the market and thought to myself “Where’s all the porn made for women? Was there any porn from a female perspective, celebrating female sexuality? Does such a thing even exist?” The answer, for the most part, was “not really.”

At the time, when I’d ask other porn directors and producers why there was no porn being made for women, they’d all laugh and tell me there was no market for it, and that “women don’t watch porn”. I thought they might just have it backwards; the reason that no women watched porn is that all the porn being made was geared toward male tastes and preferences/male fantasies. I figured if someone made an effort to create porn from a woman’s point of view, maybe women would be interested. Looks like I was right, because here we are, 11 years later, and Sssh.com is going strong.

2.How is Sssh.com different from other websites with porn movies? What can women find here that they can't find anywhere else?

The biggest difference is that we make our movies based on the feedback, naughty confessions and submissions from our members and fans. We aren’t assuming that we know what women prefer to see, and I’m not sitting here thinking “Well, I’m a woman; we’ll just make what I want to see and that should be fine.” I accept that I’m not representative of all women, and if I were to make porn based on strictly my own preferences, that might be better liked by the average female viewer than what male-dominated studios create, but it still wouldn’t be entertainment made for my audience. It would not represent all female fantasies. To create this sort of adult entertainment, you have to take the time to ask women what they want to see, listen to their responses, and then shape your productions accordingly.

3. What do they look for most often? Movies, knowledge articles? And have you noticed any changes in women's preferences (e.g. few years ago they were more interested in soft erotic movies, now they're more open and willing to explore).

The truth is that women’s tastes in erotica are as varied and diverse as those of men. You can’t really point at a few aspects and say “That’s what women want to see.” You can make certain generalizations, though, and those generalizations definitely inform what we do at Sssh.com. For example, many women like there to be more of a “connection” between the actors – more foreplay, and most importantly real intimacy and passion, as opposed to people just going through the motions. Because of this, we book our actors based on chemistry and look for people who really enjoy working with each other, because their genuine pleasure translates on the screen and you can tell they are actually having fun, they are enjoying each other. In fact many of our movies have real couples. Over the years we have seen more requests for “harder” and “kinkier” material, but it’s not as though those have become the dominant requests. A noticeable increase, yes, but not an overwhelming amount. I would guess that the cause is the vast amounts of free pornography from the tube sites.
