Interviews We Love

This is an Interview from the print version of Glamour UK. It reflects on the changes and state of the industry in 2020

3/ How inclusive is the industry when it comes to black and trans bodies, disabled performers and those who are non-binary? What more needs to be done - are they still being fetishized or marginalized?

The adult industry has always been a relatively diverse space, especially relative to mainstream media. However, as is the case with all types of media and narratives, certain creators and/or standpoints have been privileged over time. This is tied to accessibility and control over the modes of production and distribution, as well as where media pundits and consumers choose to focus. But as technology has democratized the modes of production -- you can create content with your cell phone -- and distribution (as well as marketing), we are seeing an increasing symbiotic shift. Viewers have greater access and are seeking a broader range of content. Creators, who are now more and more in control of production and marketing, are now able to create media that -- in some instances -- corresponds more closely to their own ideals, reflections, and so on.

Trans men and models with various physical abilities remain less visible, however, content production and consumption has opened up significantly for trans women and performers of color. The best way for the public to support increased diversification is to pay producers and models for their work. There is no such thing as “free” porn, and paying for content via ethical outlets demonstrates a great picture of what sort of erotica is desired by the public. Stealing work from emerging artists and niche creators is especially egregious and undermines the progress we have made in diversifying erotic media.

4/ Do you think that porn is changing to address this and become more inclusive? Do you think lockdown- and the growth of performers creating their own content has aided that?

I do think porn is becoming more inclusive, driven mostly by young people who are demanding that, not just from the adult industry, but from the world at large. I do think the Covid lockdown and the way it has led so many more performers to self-produce content could help propel diversity in the industry.

On a very basic level, the more people you have from different backgrounds and experiences contributing their ideas and vision, the more diverse the overall market of ideas becomes.

The increase in diversity in the adult industry started well before the pandemic came around and I hope it continues to build up steam in the months and years ahead. The diversification of the adult industry is something deeply needed that has been a long time coming. It’s been wonderful to behold – particularly from the perspective of a female filmmaker who felt quite lonely back in the 90s, nearly alone among an ocean of straight white men.
