Interviews We Love

1. On a global scale, why is female-friendly porn important in contemporary society?

Whether or not you think it’s a positive thing, porn is popular, and porn influences the way that people think – and in some cases even how they behave – where sex is concerned. Since so much of the porn on the market is made by and for men, the perspective and preferences of women aren’t often included or accounted for in typical pornography. To me, that’s why it’s important that there’s porn made by and for women, to ensure that at least some of the porn on the market emphasizes a woman’s pleasure and the feminine perspective; it’s important that there are depictions available that show people having real sex, experiencing real pleasure, and not just something that satisfies male-dominant fantasies.

2. What can you tell me about female porn habits today? ie. what is popular in female porn/what do women like to watch based on your research? Are there certain trends?

People ask me this all the time, and I get the sense that they are disappointed with the answer, or think it’s a cop-out – but the truth is that women’s preferences in porn are as varied and diverse as those of men. For example, one of the complaints we hear from women about a lot of porn is that there’s too much anal sex, but on the other hand, when we poll our members, one of the things that they consistently ask for more of is – you guessed it – more anal sex!

Having said that, there are certain preferences that are more common than others. One of the big ones is that our members want to see true passion and a palpable commitment to mutual gratification. They want to see women enjoying sex, and their sexuality. A connection between the performers, and something that’s more like the sort of sex they might have in their own lives, as opposed to the mechanical thrusting, uncomfortable positions and quasi-acrobatic sex acts that are so common in typical porn.

3. How many subscribers/users does Sssh.com have?.

We don’t give out precise subscriber numbers for Sssh.com. What I can tell is that over 30,000 women have filled out our surveys over the years, and many more have provided us with feedback and comments via email and through our customer support channels.

4. There is research out there that claims: most women don't like porn and in any event those that do like it tend to watch the same porn as men and stick to the conventional hard-core porn sites.  Therefore, female-friendly porn is redundant.  How would you respond to this argument and if you agree/disagree can you explain why?

My response is that with the overwhelming majority of porn being porn made by men, it’s no surprise that women largely watch that manner of porn; it’s just a function of the numbers and what has been available on the market, historically speaking. Now that there are more women directors and producers making porn, my bet is that similar research will report very different results 5-10 years from now.
