Interviews We Love

A wonderful interview with Rich Moreland from 3hattergrindhouse. This was one of the first of many. It was released in 2015.

6. Jacky has mentioned that she has a difficult time understanding how our society can tolerate violence in the media, yet be condemning of sexuality. Do you agree and what explains it, do you think? Critics say BDSM is violence toward women and any woman who likes to shoot fetish or kinky scenes must be psychologically damaged. How would you respond? In other words, what is normal sexuality?

I absolutely agree with Jacky about the dichotomy in the societal reaction to depictions of sex vs. depictions of violence, but it doesn’t particularly confuse me, because the answer is simple: Hypocrisy is hardly a rare commodity in our culture.

To be honest, just like the critique of feminist porn which says it’s no different from the “male gaze” of mainstream porn, a person’s definition of “normal sexuality” says more about that person than it does the sex act in question. Is oral sex “normal”? I can think of at least one ancient religious text which says no. On the other hand, if you flip through the Kama Sutra, you’d be hard pressed to conclude the authors considered virtually any kind of sex ‘abnormal.’

Here’s a question I have for people who say BDSM is “violence toward women”: What if the dominant person in the depiction is the woman and the sub is a man? How well does their little axiom hold up then? I take it violence against men is OK? Or is it just that we trust men to make decisions we don’t trust women to make? A man can, for example, climb into a cage to fight with another man for the entertainment of the masses, but replace one of them with a woman and have it be a spanking video instead of a fist fight and all of sudden it’s “exploitation.”

Sounds like selectively paternalistic bullshit to me, but maybe I’m just missing something. After all, I’m a woman, so obviously someone needs to step in and protect me from myself when I have ideas about what to do with my body of which they disapprove, right? (The people currently vying for the Republican presidential nomination sure seem to think so.)

4. My next book is on JSJ. How would you describe her films, particularly her features? What does she do to stand out in the business (if you believe she does)?

I absolutely love Jacky to death. She has been so hugely important to the Mindbrowse.com event series. She’s so eloquent and always does an amazing job as a panelist.

Jacky’s film work reflects her personality; she’s a very perceptive, highly creative woman with something to say. I think she’d be successful in making movies of any kind – but I’m glad she chose porn, because she’s one of the directors who is really helping to raise the bar on quality within the adult industry. I honestly don’t get to spend much time watching movies made by my peers, but when I do find the time, Jacky is on the very short list of directors whose work I make a point of watching.

7. Thinking back to your dating years, how have young women who might be interested in your site and adult film changed in attitudes and behavior concerning sexuality, if they have at all? Is society still circumscribing female sexuality, muting a woman's voice and insisting we all have a missionary position sexual ethos?

I think society is still trying to circumscribe female sexuality, but thanks to courageous, independent, determined and self-possessed women like Candida Royalle, Jacky St. James and others, young women these days are a lot less apt to allow society to succeed.

Don’t get me wrong; there’s still too much ‘slut shaming’ and harsh judgment directed at women who are open about expressing themselves sexually, but this doesn’t mean we haven’t made any progress over the years – in some places, anyway. Sadly, one doesn’t have to look far to find societies and cultures in which women still are brutally punished for even the most reserved and tame sexual expression, let alone for making, watching or performing in porn.
